"An anthropologist proposed a game to children in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the children that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run, they all took each others hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats.
When he asked them why they had run like that when one could have had all the fruits for himself, they said, 'UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?' ('UBUNTU' in the Xhosa culture means: 'I am because we are.)"
Un antropolog le-a propus un joc unor copii dintr-un trib african. A pus un cos cu fructe in apropierea unui copac si le-a spus copiilor ca acela care va ajunge primul la el va castiga fructele. Cand le-a dat startul la alergare, s-au luat cu totii de mana si au alergat impreuna, apoi s-au asezat impreuna, bucurandu-se de rasplata.
Cand au fost intrebati de ce au alergat impreuna, cand doar unul putea sa ia toate fructele pentru sine, au raspuns: "UBUNTU, cum poate unul dintre noi sa fie fericit, cand ceilalti sunt tristi?" (UBUNTU in cultura Chosa inseamna "Eu sunt pentru ca noi suntem".).
