Zamboanga City, Philippines - Ten people were wounded Wednesday in a bombing allegedly targeting a provincial governor in the southern Philippines, a regional police chief said. Chief Superintendent Bensali Jarabani said the explosion occurred a few metres from the capitol building in Sulu province on Jolo island, 1,000 kilometres south of Manila.
Jarabani said the explosion hit the convoy of vehicles of Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan, who was on his way home in downtown Jolo.
Five police officers and three soldiers who were Tan's security escorts and two civilians were injured in the blast.
Investigators said the attack was apparently aimed at assassinating Tan, who escaped the bombing unhurt.
Bomb experts were still determining the make of the bomb, which was placed on a parked motorcycle.
Thousands of government forces are conducting operations on Jolo to rescue Eugenio Vagni, a 62-year-old International Committee of the Red Cross employee held captive by Muslim Abu Sayyaf rebels.
Vagni was abducted January 15 along with fellow Red Cross workers Andreas Notter of Switzerland and Mary Jean Lacaba of the Philippines.
Notter and Lacaba have been released by the guerrillas, and only Vagni, who is reportedly suffering from a hernia injury, remained in captivity.
