"Extra Ecclesia nulla salus" este o veche dogmă a Bisericii. În această formulare ("Nu există salvare în afara Bisericii") se pare că aparține Sf Ciprian.
Pe scurt, acest prim articol despre care înțelegem că deschide o întreagă serie, amintește principalele interpretări posibile ale acestei dogme, spectrul fiind cuprins între o interpretare strictă, și anume că apartenența formală la Biserica Catolică este condiție a mântuirii și o interpretare lărgită, care se bazează pe ideea că "sufletul Bisericii" trece dincolo de granițele vizibile ale Trupului Mistic al lui Cristos.

Trecând peste faptul că MD nu intră mai în amănunt pentru a clarifica mai bine cele două interpretări, dacă într-adevăr pot exista mai multe interpretări, o să aducem un citat de la Conciliul IV Lateran (1215) sub papa Inocent III, sinod considerat ecumenic de romano-catolici.

There is indeed one universal church of the faithful, outside of which nobody at all is saved, in which Jesus Christ is both priest and sacrifice. His body and blood are truly contained in the sacrament of the altar under the forms of bread and wine, the bread and wine having been changed in substance, by God's power, into his body and blood, so that in order to achieve this mystery of unity we receive from God what he received from us. Nobody can effect this sacrament except a priest who has been properly ordained according to the church's keys, which Jesus Christ himself gave to the apostles and their successors. Conform acestei mărturisiri de credință nimeni nu este mântuit sau nu are mântuire în afara Bisericii universale în care Iisus Hristos este preotul și jertfa. Mântuirea este adusă prin botez, și mai precis prin botezul în apă. Rămâne însă sentința categorică a acestui conciliu al latinilor că în afara Bisericii universale a lui Hristos nimeni nu este mântuit sau nu are mântuire.
