"Deluded Doubt

Doubt is a mental factor that engages its object two-pointedly or wavers in hesitation between two alternative viewpoints.

Not all doubt is deluded doubt.

Deluded doubt is a specific type of doubt where the object is anything that it is important to realize in order to attain salvation, such as the existence of God, heaven and hell and where the hesitation is in favor of the incorrect view denying the existence of such objects.

Deluded doubt is a doubt that interferes with attaining salvation.

The doubts we have about objects that are not important to know in order to attain liberation are not deluded.

For example, if someone comes in the door and we wonder 'Is this John?',
our doubt is not one of the root delusions.

It is important to distinguish between deluded doubts and doubts that are the beginning of wisdom.

The former are to be abandoned but the latter are necessary if we are to gain realizations.

When we first listen to or read spiritual teachings we have many doubts because these contradict our wrong views and incorrect assumptions and makes us undecided about them.

This kind of indecision is a sign that we are beginning to develop wisdom,
because it is the starting-point for becoming certain of correct views.

If we receive spiritual teachings without ever developing
this kind of doubt, there is no way to gain conviction in the teachings.

For example, when we first hear teachings on hell we may begin to doubt

'I think that hell could exist, but do it really exist?',
If hell is experimented briefly on this earth this could be an indication that such state of existence also could exist elsewhere'

Without such doubts at the beginning, it is impossible to realize the existence of hell later.

These doubts are doubts tending towards the truth.

They take us in the right direction and actually help us to increase our understanding and clarity of mind.

By contrast, deluded doubts destroy our faith in what is virtuous and worthwhile and make us undecided about objects that are trustworthy and beneficial.

They destroy the lucidity and joy that we experience when we generate admiring faith.

They undermine our virtuous aspirations, and make our previously peaceful mind unsettled and uneasy.

If we listen to or read correct spiritual instructions and think to ourself,
'Those teachings are probably wrong',
€˜That instruction is probably useless',
these are deluded doubts.

Such doubts can arise when we are about to perform a virtuous action or when we have embarked upon some altruistic deed.

It makes us think that we have been misguided and so it destroys our good intention.

Deluded doubt is very dangerous because it quickly halts our spiritual practice and throws us into confusion.

It can arise when our faith and effort degenerate, or when we meet someone or read something that contradicts our spiritual views.

Deluded doubt can also arise as a result of inappropriate, excessive, or untimely analysis.

Overanalysis or untimely analysis induces excessive doubts, which interfere with our practice.

Therefore sometimes even blind faith is better than overanalysis because blind faith can induce strong virtuous determinations whereas overanalysis brings doubt and confusion."
