Tot nu am inteles, de ce sa luam o bucata de panza, sa pictam pe ea un chip atribuit unui personaj biblic, sa o declaram sfanta, sa ardem tamaie inaintea ei, sa o sarutam si sa ingenunchem inaintea picturii, daca avem garantia ca orice copil al lui Dumnezeu care crede in Christos are Duhul : Romani 8:9 Voi însă nu mai sunteţi pământeşti, ci duhovniceşti, dacă Duhul lui Dumnezeu locuieşte în adevăr în voi.

Dar de ce să nu ? Sigur, nu este obligatoriu, dar:

"Şi astfel nu există nici o folosire dreaptă a lucrurilor materiale care să nu poată fi îndreptată spre sfinţirea omului şi preamărirea lui Dumnezeu" - citat din Catehism.

Şi:

"As the sacred and life-giving cross is everywhere set up as a symbol, so also should the images of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, the holy angels, as well as those of the saints and other pious and holy men be embodied in the manufacture of sacred vessels, tapestries, vestments, etc., and exhibited on the walls of churches, in the homes, and in all conspicuous places, by the roadside and everywhere, to be revered by all who might see them. For the more they are contemplated, the more they move to fervent memory of their prototypes. "Icoanele sunt necesare și esențiale pentru că apără învățătura deplină și dreaptă asupra Întrupării. Deși Dumnezeu nu poate fi reprezentat în Natura Lui eternă ("...nimeni nu L-a văzut pe Dumnezeu, Ioan 1, 18), El poate fi totuși zugrăvit pur și simplu pentru că "s-a făcut Om întrupat". Pot fi deci făcute imagini materiale ale Aceluia care a luat un trup material. Luând un trup material, Dumnezeu a dovedit că materia poate fi mântuită. El a îndumnezeit materia, făcând-o purtătoare de Duh, astfel că, dacă trupul poate deveni un locaș al Duhului, tot astfel o pot face și lemnul sau culoarea, deși în mod diferit."
